Have you felt the urge to burn a candle lately? I’ve got one! When the weather gets cooler, I’ll pull out all the candles I can find! Soon it will look like a scene from Phantom of the Opera. I learned a few years ago how good soy candles are: They burn very cleanly and last longer than ordinary candles. The problem is that they are also more expensive than regular candles. Because they burn so much longer, I think the higher price is worth it, but then I discovered I can easily make them myself! This makes my luxury soy candles a very affordable treat. They have also become a great gift that I give to people for holidays, birthdays, housewarming parties. …housewarming. That’s it! Candles are the perfect gift, right? But because it’s homemade, it’s no longer ordinary and becomes special. Anyway, they are very easy to make and I will show you step by step how to make soy candles so you can enjoy them yourself or give them as gifts! I use the microwave method because I find it much easier and less messy than cooking on the stove. This recipe uses one pound of wax and makes three 8 oz candles. 
Instructions
Cover the table or countertop with newspaper to protect it. Apply hot glue to the bottom of the wick (the metal part) and quickly glue it to the center of the bottom of each jar. 
Using a kitchen scale, measure out 1 pound of wax into a glass measuring cup. This pretty much fills it up. Melt the wax in a glass measuring cup in the microwave for 5 minutes. Heat the wax to 170-180°. Use a candle thermometer to check the temperature of the wax after 5 minutes. If the wash is not hot enough after 5 minutes, continue heating at 30 second intervals to bring the wash to the correct temperature. Remove the measuring cup from the microwave with an oven mitt. It’s gonna be hot! 
When the temperature reaches 170-180°, place the measuring cup on the table and gently stir the wax. The wax must cool to about 140° so that the perfume oil can be added. This part is starting to get a little boring. Keep stirring and check the temperature every few minutes. After each temperature check, I like to wipe the thermometer with a paper towel so the laundry doesn’t get cold on it. 
When the wax has cooled to 140°, pour in an ounce of flavoring and continue to stir. It won’t be any different because there is no color in the perfume. 
The spark plugs should be pre-pumped at approximately 130-135°. Make sure your pots are in a place where they can stay for a while, because once the candles are filled, don’t move the pots until they have cooled. Divide the wax evenly in each container.

The wicks should now be attached as the candles cool, keeping them in the center. I use pencils or clothespins to hold the strands in place. 
That’s it! It is very interesting to check the candles from time to time as they cool, to see how the wax solidifies and turns white underneath. Once the candles have cooled, you can cut about half an inch off the wicks. 
Tips and Tricks
- Keep a few paper towels handy to wipe down the thermometer after each use to avoid accumulation of wax. Also, wipe down the measuring cup immediately after pouring the candles. This makes cleaning easier.
- Allow the candles to cool overnight and light them no sooner than 24 hours after making them so that they are fully solidified.
- To make a gift, I simply cut a circle of fabric and wrap it between the lid and the band of a can.
- You can also make candles in cups or mugs of similar size. I want to buy some coffee aromas to make coffee candles!
Learning to make your own soy candles is not difficult at all! The last time I bought the ingredients, the price was about $3 per candle, which is a great price for good sized soy candles! I like to burn them at home, and many people have enjoyed getting them as gifts.
